Growing up in Massachusetts, Dr. Elizabeth Lidstone-Jayanath originally wanted to be a veterinarian. After a time, however, she decided she would rather make a career out of helping children instead of animals. Upon graduating from the University of New Hampshire and UMass Medical School, she completed her residency in Pediatrics at Bay State Hospital in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Dr. Lidstone-Jayanath is a physician with a warm, friendly manner who strongly believes in educating her patients as much as possible. “I think it’s important to take the time to explain to children and parents the nature of their illness and how I intend to treat it. No matter how busy we are as physicians we can’t forget how important communicating with our patients is.”
In her practice, Dr. Lidstone-Jayanath enjoys the challenge of treating a wide range of patients. “Pediatrics is different than other practices because we are treating patients as young as infants all the way up to the college years. Obviously your approach has to change depending on the age group you are working with – it’s a lot different communicating with a 3 year-old than a teenager.”
Dr. Lidstone-Jayanath truly enjoys her work as a pediatrician in Leominster. “Our staff here is really tremendous, plus I like the cultural diversity of practicing here. I have treated patients who come from many different parts of the world including Vietnam, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Mexico, Central America, Uruguay and other countries. It really makes our work interesting.”
It’s not surprising Dr. Lidstone-Jayanath enjoys meeting people from different countries since she has always enjoyed traveling herself. In fact, her husband is from India and she loves to visit there with him. She has visited many different countries including Malaysia, Singapore, Sweden, the Soviet Union as well as countries in the Caribbean. However, since the birth of her two sons she has been spending less time traveling and more at home.
During her spare time, Dr. Lidstone-Jayanath enjoys outdoor sports such as skiing and hiking and cycling. Each summer, she makes a point to go camping in Vermont with her family. Dr. Lidstone-Jayanath also enjoys reading internationally known authors such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Some of her favorites are Love in the Time of Cholera and One Hundred Years of Solitude. “As a physician I like to read about people and human relationships and Marquez is a real master of that – a very enjoyable writer.”
