Rheumatology department

As a rheumatologist, Dr. John Reed deals with many different diseases related to the muscles and joints including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and lupus. “I like rheumatology because you can often examine the patient and decide what the problem is. It’s a very hands-on type of medicine, which I enjoy practicing,” he explains. “But what I like most about being a rheumatologist is that patients come in experiencing a lot of pain and you have the chance to make them feel better…that’s very satisfying to me.”

Dr. Reed is excited about the new innovations that have transformed the treatment of rheumatic diseases. “There have been terrific advancements in treatments for rheumatoid arthritis and other diseases that involve inflammation response. We call these new drugs biologics. The cause of inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis is still unknown, but these drugs can provide very effective treatment in many cases.”

Diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis in women and men is another area of expertise for Dr. Reed. “Osteoporosis prevention and treatment is a field where there have been significant treatment breakthroughs in the past 10 years. I enjoy working with each patient to determine how they can optimize their future bone health to prevent future fractures.”

Dr. Reed also frequently sees patients for the diagnosis and treatment of osteoarthritis. “It’s one of the biggest problems people face as they get older and it can really affect their lifestyle. I enjoy explaining the pros and cons of different arthritis treatments and what the costs and benefits are. We can help people reduce pain and enjoy more mobility with a range of treatments as well as exercise. For those patients who have severely damaged joints we may recommend they see an orthopedic surgeon to consider joint replacement therapy.”

As well as seeing patients, Dr. Reed also teaches residents at St. Vincent Hospital. He enjoys the interaction with those learning how to treat rheumatic diseases. “The students are very inquisitive and help me stay up-to-date on the latest therapies and treatments. It’s a refreshing challenge to be a good instructor, and I think that’s what makes teaching so interesting.”

Dr. Reed notes that Fallon Clinic has a lot to offer rheumatology patients seeking treatment. “We have a whole department of different rheumatologists to choose from and we can treat people for almost every type of rheumatic disease. In difficult cases, we can easily consult with each other to find the best diagnosis and course of treatment. For patients interested in the newest medications we offer a range of clinical research trials for osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Plus, we have an excellent physical therapy department here and other specialists that can help. I’m very proud of the care we provide here.”
